A Rockery Story
These shots are over several days at the rookery in the Alligator Farm at St. Augustine Fla. The first image shows one tree in the rookery. In the left mid portion there was a nest with a single mid-sized Great White Egret chick. The second shows the chick being fed. When the parents were away a male tried to throw the chick out of the nest. The baby was able to hold on by one wing and get back into the nest. At which point the male started stabbing the chick with it's beak. The young bird made it's escape down the limb of the tree, far enough away from the male to be safe. The male then took over the nest and started displaying. Bloodied and with an injured wing the chick spent the night on the limb and seemed somewhat recovered the next morning. However the mother came back and restored order at the nest but the chick would only climb to the top of the limb where it was ignored. It even slept above the nest. On the third day the chick was back in the nest but the mother seemed perplexed by the whole situation. And that's when I had to leave. Maybe the mother started to feed the chick but I doubt it.
